A Great Moment in Sports: Wilt Chamberlain

 

One reason that people love sports is that at any given moment, something truly amazing could happen. A record could be broken or an athlete could do something unbelievable. The type of moment that sports fans live for happened in Pennsylvania in 1962.

 

The Philadelphia Warriors met the New York Knicks at the Hersey Park Arena to play against each other. Fans were already excited because it was expected to be a very good game. But they had no idea just how exciting it would be. After a long fought battle the game was coming to an end. Wilt Chamberlain the star of the Warriors had already racked up an impressive 98 points. But with just less than a minute to go, he shook off New York's pathetic attempt to guard him and slammed the ball into the net giving him a total of a hundred points for the game. After Wilt Chamberlain made that history-making basket there were about 46 seconds left of gameplay. However, the crowd was so excited after Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points that the crowd went absolutely wild. Hundreds of people leapt from the seats in the stadium and rushed onto the floor. Dozens of people surrounded Chamberlain, screaming and clambering to touch him. The scene was pure pandemonium. What's even more astonishing is that although the clock was stopped after throngs of spectators rushed onto the court, the clock was never restarted. The game ended with 46 seconds still left to be played.

 

Wilt Chamberlain was also impressive on many other nights as well. He holds several other records although the scene that occurred that night in the Highland Park was definitely the most memorable one. Wilt Chamberlain also holds a record for the most rebounds in a game. He also has second most rebounds in a season, second only to the great Michael Jordan. In total he holds of seventy records, all but ten of those records he holds by himself. He played in the NBA for 14 years and he was a phenomenal player throughout his career. In 1978, Chamberlain was inducted into the basketball hall of fame. And he is included in almost every list of the greatest basketball players. He has also received the honor of having his jersey retired six times.
